The type of computers called netbooks, seeing as they are more or less new on the scene, have got a few other names applied to them like mini notebooks or simply ultraportables. The term notebook computer being synonymous with laptop.

Within the short period in time since their inception, netbook computers have been expanding in size and capabilities, while during that same span of time netbooks are being made lighter and more and more small. As a result, physical properties like their dimensions and how little they weigh probably won’t end up being what can tell them apart.

As it looks at this time, maybe a Netbook grade computer is alright to be described to be a smallish, lower-powered laptop that also has no optical disc drive(cd/dvd player/recorder). But that probably won’t be for too long either, because optical drives are being manufactured ever smaller and will soon be accommodated in a netbook computer. Plus, the wireless connectivity for computers will soon be reliable enough that external media like dvd’s and blu- ray disks can simply be done without.

Anyway, for the time being, a netbook might best be identified as a smaller, lower priced notebook computer without an optical disc drive.
